In
alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a major structural reform in the
assessment system for Class X beginning from the academic session 2025–26.
The traditional “single, high-stakes annual exam” model has now been replaced
with a more flexible Dual Board Examination System, offering students two
board exams within the same academic year.
This
change aims to make learning more meaningful, reduce stress, and provide
students with a fair chance to demonstrate their true potential.
1. Overview of the Dual Board Examination System
The new
model includes two examinations:
All
students must appear in the first exam. The second exam is only for
those who wish to improve their scores or clear a compartment.
This
approach removes the stigma associated with compartment exams and supports a
more learner-friendly system.
2. Objectives Behind the New System
a. Stress Reduction
The
two-exam model prevents a single day’s performance from defining a student’s
academic journey.
b. Focus on Continuous Learning
The
system encourages sustained learning instead of last-moment memorization.
c. Built-In Safety Net
Students
receive a second, stigma-free attempt to improve their performance.
3. Tentative Schedule for 2026
Exam 1 – Mandatory
Exam 2 – Optional / Improvement
Final
results will be available before Class XI admissions and subject selections
begin.
4. Best Score Policy
CBSE will
follow a “Best of Two Scores” approach:
This
policy ensures students are never penalized for taking the improvement exam.
5. Eligibility, Subjects, and Syllabus
Eligibility
Subject Limit
Students
may improve up to three subjects in the second exam.
Syllabus
There is no
reduction in the syllabus for the May attempt. Students must revise the
entire curriculum again.
6. Internal Assessments & Logistics
Internal Assessment (IA)
Registration
Entrance Exam Coordination
CBSE and
NTA will align dates so that dual board exams do not clash with major
competitive exams.
Admissions
Schools
may grant provisional admission to Class XI based on Phase 1 results.
7. Critical Compliance Guidelines
For Schools
For Teachers
For Parents & Students
Conclusion
The
introduction of two board examinations marks a progressive shift towards a
student-centric assessment model. It ensures flexibility, reduces exam-related
anxiety, and encourages continuous learning. With careful planning, compliance,
and communication among schools, teachers, parents, and students, this system
can significantly enhance the effectiveness of secondary education.
